Gin and & Tonic

Recipe Category: Drinks
Recipe Cuisine: British

This is a classic drink that dates back to the 1800s. It was born out of the medical practice of trying to prevent malaria with quinine. But quinine was so bitter and so unpalatable, that water and sugar were added (which became Tonic Water) and eventually, lime and gin were added to make it easier to take the medicine. And like other cocktails that started off as bogus medicine, people began to enjoy it. So maybe 200 years from now people in a dingy bar will be overcharged for a spritz of Lipitor and sleeping pills from a soda gun into a murky glass. Who am I kidding? In 200 years it will be living out someone's bleak imagining of the future like Mad Max or Terminator 2 or Blade Runner, so enjoy a Gin & Tonic while it lasts. Cheers!
