Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes will make you forget your childhood canned sauce memories and make you LOVE sloppy joes again.

Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes came together pretty organically and randomly for us. We have had Philly Cheese Steak Grilled Cheese sandwiches in our rotation for years (because they are AMAZING) and one day we made up a skillet and…. our bread had become furry.

So we had hamburger buns on hand from a hamburger night meal a couple of nights before. The changes I made were just enough to be extra gooey and “sloppy” and only took about a minute.

Ingredients :
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil plus more, if needed
  • ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 pound ground beef I prefer lean
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • ¾ cup beef broth
  • 8 slices Tillamook Extra Sharp White Cheddar Slices
  • Buns and burger toppings for serving
Directions:

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan or high-sided skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions have softened and browned (about 7-10 minutes).

2. Push the onions to one side of the saucepan, then add the meat to the other side. Sprinkle the meat with salt, pepper, and garlic. Cook, until the meat, is browned and cooked through, breaking it up a wooden spoon as it's cooking. Stir the meat and onions together. If there is an excessive amount of grease (more than a tablespoon), drain it off.

3. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, tomato paste, and beef broth, stir to combine. Scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to remove any browned bits. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes. The sauce should thicken and cook down. Taste and add more salt and pepper, if desired.

4. Turn off the heat. Place 3-4 slices of cheese on top of the meat and place a lid over the pan. Allow the residual heat to melt the cheese, this happens within a couple minutes. Scoop the cheesy meat onto buns and top with additional cheese (if desired), and your favorite burger toppings.
